TYH: The Health Benefit Of Eating Properly

Oct 17, 2017 | 11:37 PM

In today’s busy world, many of us are focused on what to eat. As Catherine Hansen explains there’s a new movement to focus instead on the “how” of eating.

(Announcer:) And now, “To Your Health”. Brought to you by Hart Drugs, Third Avenue Pharmacy and the Phoenix Pharmacy.

(Reporter Catherine Hansen:) ‘What’s for dinner?’ is a question commonly asked every night. But what about the ‘how’ of eating? Children are born with it, but as they grow, the ‘how’ can be unlearned. The ‘how’ of eating is broken down into four components: our attitudes around eating and feeding ourselves; acceptance of food, eating a variety and trying new things; looking at understanding our internal cues; and finally, food skills – being able to plan and get food on the table.

(Flo Sheppard – Dietician, Northern Health:) “You need to think about the resources that you have, and resources include time. So if you’re working full-time and you’ve got kids that are involved in a variety of activities, maybe you need to be thinking about quicker, prepare-ahead meals that you would be doing for your evening meals, or doing more batch-cooking on the weekend, for example. Also thinking about the money that you have available to eat, and where you live.”

(Hansen:) The ‘how’ of healthy eating typically switches the focus to quality over quanitity and building a proper meal according to Canada’s Food Guide, along with food that reflects our own personal cultures.

(Sheppard:) “Breakfast, lunch, dinner, we have three food groups. And it doesn’t have to be a whole serving, but ‘do I have three food groups on the table?’”

(Hansen:) Dieticians are hoping to turn the focus to the ‘how’ of eating through awareness and mindfulness of what’s on our plates. To your health, Catherine Hansen, CKPG News.
