Site C Review Nears Completion

Oct 30, 2017 | 5:12 PM

On August 2, 2017, the British Columbia Utilities Commission was directed by the province to review the Site C project, an 8.8 billion project consisting of a third dam and generating station on the Peace River.  Due November 1, the findings will be studied by BC Hydro, technical experts, a broad range of stakeholders, members of the public and First Nations representatives.
Once delivered, the provincial government will fully review the BCUC’s findings as well as other issues pertaining to the report, but not covered in the study. Included in the Commission’s recommendations will be advice on ratepayer impacts should the project continue, suspend operations, or face cancellation.

Although the BCUC has no jurisdiction over the Site C project, the Lieutenant Governor in Council is able to direct the Utilities Commission to inquire in any matter.

A government decision on the project is expected before the end of the year.

About Project C

In December 2014, BC Hydro was given the go-ahead by the provincial government to start construction on Site C, an $8.8 billion project to construct a third dam and generating station on the Peace River in northeast BC. Under the Clean Energy Act, the BCUC has no jurisdiction over the Site C project. However, under section 5 of the Utilities Commission Act, the Lieutenant Governor in Council is able to set terms of reference and direct the BCUC to inquire in any matter.
