The UNBC Timberwolves Women’s Basketball swept the UNBC Thunderbirds this weekend, winning 79-61 Saturday night.

The Timberwolves came out strong, including a pair of triples from Maria Mongomo, but an 18-4 T-Birds run made it 22-14 in favour of UBC after ten minutes.

“They give me so much confidence, and I always feel free to shoot,” said Mongomo postgame. “They support me and I support them.”

The Timberwolves had a 36-34 lead at the half. They outscored UBC 34-27 to solidify their second win of the season.

Maria Mongomo finished the game with 32 points.

“We had something to prove with this team, after last year’s playoffs,” said Mongomo. “After we won yesterday, we just believed. We did it as a team.”

The men’s team wasn’t as lucky this weekend. The Thunderbirds took a 104-72 win over the Timberwolves Saturday.

The Thunderbirds started out strong with a 31-13 lead after the first quarter.

Pluzhnikov led the Timberwolves with 17 points, while Marcus MacKay managed ten off the bench.

The T-Birds improve to 4-2, while the UNBC Timberwolves fall to 2-4 on the Canada West season.

“UBC is as talented a team as there is in the country,” said UNBC Coach Todd Jordan. “We had some positive spurts, but at the end of the day, their length and athleticism was too much for us.”
