Highway officials are closing a major highway in B.C.’s northwest because of a high risk of an avalanche.   According to driveBC.ca, Highway 16 is being blocked in both directions at 7:00pm (pacific) to prevent anyone from being caught in a potential snow slide.

Nearly 84 kilometres of the highway is being closed.  The western end of the closure is approximately 13 kilometres east of the Port Edward turnoff.  The eastern edge of the closure is approximately 35 kilometres west of Terrace.

The highway will remain closed overnight. Highway officials are hopeful the threat will be cleared as early as 7:00am or as late as noon Sunday.  Environment Canada posted a snowfall warning for the area early Saturday morning.
