Cougars Name Cholowski Captain

Dennis Cholowski has made a big impact in his relatively brief 20-game Cougars career.

He’s made such an impact, that the team has decided to name him captain for the 2017/18 season.

The 19-year-old is a first round pick of the Detroit Red Wings, and is playing his first season with the Cougars after electing to go the BCHL/NCAA route after bantam hockey.

After he signed an entry-level contract with the Red Wings in April, he ended his NCAA eligbility, opening the door for him to play with the Cougars this season.

He immediately stepped in to a leadership role with the team in the summer, and has been an impact player on the ice as well, posting 17 points in 20 games so far this year.

“It feels great. It’s a tremendous honour and I’m really excited for the rest of the season,” said Cholowski.

Cholowski will be the 23rd captain in Cougars history. Cougars head coach Richard Matvichuk said even though it’s his first year with the team, he took control of the dressing room early on.

“He’s one of those players who’s first on the ice, last off the ice. He wants to get better every day. His ultimate goal is to play in the National Hockey League and he’s not that far off,” said Matvichuk. “So to have that guy in the dressing room knowing that guys are going to follow him because of where he’s been and what he’s done, it was an easy decision.”

Josh Anderson and Prince George’s Brogan O’Brien will serve as the Cougars’ alternate captains.
