Lheidli T’enneh Elder Celebrates 97th Birthday

PRINCE GEORGE – There was a big birthday party at the College of New Caledonia Wednesday.  The party celebrated the 97th birthday of Lheidli T’enneh Elder Mary Gouchie and her unique ability to speak the Carrier language.  

“I love it,” said Gouchie.  “I love my language.”  Gouchie has been integral in the development of Carrier language courses at CNC. 

Gouchie is one of the few who can communicate fluently in the Carrier language but she says she’s not perfect.  “I did forget a few things over the years because I have no one to speak to,” she said.

That’s one of the reasons Gouchie got involved with the college.  “I really enjoy teaching or speaking my language,” said Gouchie.  “It makes me feel good to hear the young ones.”

The College says Gouchie has provided most the information and material that is used in CNC’s Level I and Level II Carrier language courses.
