PRINCE  GEORGE – The Windy Point Gas Station, located along Highway 97, 3 km south of the Mackenzie Junction is engulfed in flames.

Highway 97 North is closed in both directions at Windy Point. According to Drive BC, there is no detour available.

Witnesses say the fire started at the restaurant and spread into the store.

The facility also contains fuel pumps and associated above ground tanks.  It’s not clear if the fuel services or the rooms tied to the Windy Point Inn are in danger of igniting.

***Update 9:40 am

Drive BC is reporting the highway is re-opened.

***Update 11:55 am

The Windy Point Gas Station has collapsed in on itself.
Mackenzie Fire Rescue was called to attend the fire at 7:43 this morning.  When crews arrived the Windy Point Inn was fully involved. The fire occurred outside of a fire protection area of Mackenzie Fire Rescue.
Fire crews did respond because of the potential hazard posed by fire near the gas pumps and the large propane tank, once those hazards are mitigated Mackenzie Fire Rescue will be returning to the fire hall. According to the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George injuries are unknown at this time.
