Dangers of Social Media With Upcoming PG Election

PRINCE GEORGE — Social media safety company The White Hatter looked at the way smaller scale politicians handle their campaigns online. They say in light of the degree that Twitter and Facebook have been used as a political tool, we have to be more careful than ever to take what we see online with a grain of salt.

Even our local politicians aren’t immune to false information circulating on the internet. This past January an article was posted citing Prince George City Council had a new bylaw banning decorative items such as Rudolf noses and antlers on all vehicles.

Prince George City Councillor Garth Frizzell says there was even a made-up quote in the article citing him.

“I got a late night Facebook Messenger from a citizen saying ‘What is with this vehicle decoration by-law? I want to be able to have my Vancouver Canucks flag fly whenever’, and I said ‘What do you mean? That’s not something we even have jurisdiction over’,” says Frizzell.
