‘Rebicycling’ Turning Trash Into Treasure

PRINCE GEORGE – Recycling bikes into jewellery and clocks, that’s Marianne Koops’ way of making her bike shop a little greener.

Koops started ‘Rebicycled Treasures’ after seeing the excessive amount of unusable parts laying around her bike shop. Some of the extra parts, in part, go to metal scrap and salvage, but the rest head to the landfill.

Koops has tried to change that by transforming parts like a bike’s cassettes into clocks.

She hopes other businesses will see new possibilities in their own materials, even if it takes a little extra work.

“The cleaning is the worst part of it, it’s a very dirty, gross job. I try and use as many environmentally friendly products to do the cleaning and process and from there it’s just a matter of creating ideas,” says Marianne Koops, Owner Rebicycled Treasures

Businesses transforming garbage into re-usable materials are being praised by the Regional District.

“Anytime anybody, whether it’s a business or a resident has the opportunity to either reduce or re-use any type of materials, that is a really good waste management technique,”Laura Zapotichny, Waste Diversion Program Leader.

With a little creativity, It might be time to take another look at the things you see as ‘just garbage’.
