Downtown Student Housing A Priority

PRINCE GEORGE – The Student Needs Committee has released the newest survey to Council.

Transit once again tops the list of students needs. But affordable student housing also remains a priority for students. As part of that priority, students identified downtown as the preferred location for student housing.

However, the Committee also set out some of the amenities required by students. They need housing near transit, housing that incorporates things like utilities.  Much work has been made on the Transit file but downtown student housing hasn’t moved off the wish list yet.

“It’s difficult because the City doesn’t build housing. We already have some fairly aggressive incentives for housing development,” explains Councillor Jillian Merrick, Chair of the Student Needs Committee. “But it’s also a matter of working with housing developers to help understand the volume of student population that exists in the community, the length of the wait lists, the rents that are being paid, what the amenities are for students, what are the attractions and transit stops.”
