VALEMOUNT – New affordable rental housing will soon be available to students and low-income people in the Valemount region. The Province and the Columbia Basin Trust announced today that they are partnering with the Valemount Affordable Rentals Society, to purchase and renovate an eight-unit motel at 1295 Juniper Street for the project.

“Affordability has been a serious concern for people living in the basin for far too long,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development and Minister Responsible for the Columbia Basin Trust. A combined investment of $220,000 from the B.C. government and the trust is going towards the housing project, which is part of a $14 million commitment over the next three years to build 225 new units in the region.

“Our focus for phase one is student housing, and our long-term vision is to become the local resource for affordable housing in our community,” said Riette Kenkel, president, Valemount Affordable Rentals Society.

People will be able to move into their units by June of this year, which is just in time for any student tenants who have signed up for summer courses at Valemount College.
