BC Government Phasing Out Liquor Servers Wage By 2021

VICTORIA — A worker’s rights group says it’s happy that the BC government plans to close the wage gap between liquor servers and the province’s minimum wage, but it would prefer the change happens sooner.
The NDP government says starting in June, liquor servers will get incremental raises until their wage catches up to the regular minimum wage in 2021 when it is set to be 15 dollars and 20 cents.
Retail Action Network says the liquor servers’ minimum wage reinforces pay inequity because most servers are women.
However, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says it’s disappointed that farm workers have not been brought under minimum-wage protection but instead get a small hike in piece rates next year as the Fair Wage Commission spends more time studying their situation.
