Edmonton police chief to meet with NFL about Sept. 30 attack outside CFL game

Edmonton’s police chief says he will speak with National Football League executives about the Sept. 30 attack outside a CFL football game that injured a police officer.

Rod Knecht says he has been invited to an NFL security services meeting next month near San Diego.

Knecht says his staff have completed a review of what happened that night outside Commonwealth Stadium and the Edmonton Eskimos’ game-day procedures.

An Edmonton police commission official says police have learned some lessons about the safe and efficient movement of crowds.

Four pedestrians were later hurt by a suspect in a speeding cube van hours after the police officer was attacked.

Knecht says he also hopes to learn from the NFL as Edmonton prepares to host the Grey Cup this November.

“It’s a reciprocal relationship where we’re both going to learn from each other on how to best keep the sports-going public safe,” Knecht said Thursday.

He said the four pedestrians are recovering and making progress.

“A couple of people still have some issues,” he said. 

“One will have long-standing issues as we understand it right now but hopefully she’s on the road to recovery and the doctors are even saying she’s doing much better than they anticipated, so that’s all good news.”

Const. Mike Cherny, who was thrown in the air after being hit by the van and then stabbed, has since returned to duty.

Abdulahi Hasan Sharif faces five counts of attempted murder and other charges. (CHED)
