PRINCE GEORGE– When the Prince George Spruce Kings take the ice on Friday the team might look a little different. Tuesday morning was a special one for the Prince George Spruce Kings as the hockey team revealed the Indigenous jerseys the team will be wearing during their home opener.

“To have a night where we are going to honor the victims, honor the survivors, the families, the communities. I think that’s important. The Spruce Kings have big ties to the Indigenous community in town. We’ve been around for a lot of years and we get a lot of support from them and this is just a little way for us to be able to give back and maybe help a little with the healing.” – Mike Hawes, General Manager, Prince George Spruce Kings

The jerseys were designed by Clayton Gauthier after the Spruce Kings reached out to the local Indigenous artist. A project he was happy to be a part of.

“The Spruce Kings approached me a while ago asking to create something new for the team to honor the first peoples of the territory here. So it was a blessing to be a part of it.” – Clayton Gauthier, Indigenous artist

Gauthier says he dedicated the jersey design to his ancestors and is excited to see the team wear them this Friday

“I’m honored to be a part of this and I’m doing my best to always be mindful of my ancestors and what they’ve been through, what they’ve gone through and where we’re at now. And I know, I know they’re dancing with us and so I dedicate this piece to them.” – Clayton Gauthier, Indigenous artist

Players are excited as well. Spruce Kings captain Colton Cameron loves the jersey design and believes it unites a team. Especially on such a special day.

“It’s such an important day to reflect and bring awareness of the past and be able to reconcile about it. It honestly brings us all together and shows a lot of unity to have this event.” –Colton Cameron, Spruce Kings Captain

The team will be taking on The Vernon Vipers, on September 30th. There will be many special events planned during the game including Indigenous dancers and drummers. All fans attending the game will be given an orange t-shirt as well.
