Ice levels on lakes in the region unstable; experts advise extreme caution

PRINCE GEORGE — Ice fishing and snowmobiling are common winter activities in the North, but if you plan to head out to the lake anytime soon, it may not be the best idea.

With the current freeze/thaw situation, ice levels on many lakes are unstable and unpredictable.

When out on a lake, an important thing to know is that the ice levels will not be consistent across the entire surface. Just looking out at the ice from the shoreline will not give you a good indication of how to check how thick the ice is.

Everyone is reminded to take extreme caution when heading out and it is strongly recommended that you do not head out onto lake surfaces. Take the time and make sure you’re not walking on thin ice.
