PRINCE GEORGE — A serious avalanche involving people in the Oasis riding area south of Valemount took place Saturday (Jan. 21) afternoon.

In a summary online, Avalanche Canada says the large avalanche had a depth of 80 to 120 centimetres, and was remotely triggered and likely ran on the November facets near the bottom of the snowpack.

Previously, Avalanche Canada reported of three avalanches on Thursday (Jan. 19). The non-profit says all the recent avalanches took place at the upper treeline and lower alpine.

“Avalanches like these are most likely to be triggered on steep, shallow and previously undisturbed slopes,” Avalanche Canada states.

On social media, Avalanche Canada calls the snowpack near Valemount dangerous and volatile. It asks back country users to stay well back from steep slopes and avoid any terrain where an avalanche’s consequences may be severe.

Until at least Sunday (Jan. 22) at 4 p.m., Avalanche Canada says there are considerable (three out of five) danger ratings near Valemount, and north and east of Prince George.
