A Prince George children’s author is seeing his hard work pay off. Larry Fielding is selling his series, The X Tails, across the country … and even the world.
“When I started the books, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into,” says Larry. “It’s been a lot of work, we are still working hard to spread the word. It’s great when I see the books travel around and get into the States, and into other countries and continents too.”
Larry moved to Prince George 20 years ago to study at the University. While he got a degree in Forestry, writing was always something he had a passion for. After having children, Larry began exploring his creativity.
“Our son was two at the time and he would be like ‘Daddy, daddy tell me a story’,” says his wife, Corrie Fielding. “So Larry would tell this story with 5 super heroes and a dog and would have this great message. Then Colton would say ‘Mom you tell me a story’, and my stories were terrible. Larry just had this flow and his words were magic and I just knew it was a gift. I said ‘You should write children’s books’.”
8 books, and well over 10,000 sold copies later, Larry credits much of his success to his family.
The X Tails are inspired by northern sports (snowboarding, dirt-biking, skiing etc.). 50 % of all proceeds from the Skiing book go towards purchasing sports equipment for children with mobility problems. So far, 2 sports wheelchairs have been donated to School District 57.
Larry says the modern tales have traditional values. “I have snuck a positive theme into each book. So there’s one about believing in yourself, another about respecting the environment.”
He has big dreams for the future. “I’ve got another idea for another series. My ultimate dream is for The X Tails to become a cartoon one day.”
