Government Moves To Protect Caribou

The B-C government has joined with a local snowmobile club to sign an agreement to protect caribou in the Skeena Region.

The stewardship management agreement with the Houston Snowmobile Club is meant to addresses the influence of recreation on northern caribou in the Telkwa Mountains.  The province says recreation has been identified as a threat to caribou populations, since it could displace the animals from high-quality habitat and increase predator access to their ranges.

Under the agreement, certain areas will be closed to snowmobilers when there are caribou present.
