Snow Could Save You In Backcountry

PRINCE GEORGE – One of Northern BC’s attractions is its ‘great outdoors’, but those who travel the backcountry face risks, especially in winter.

Author of Canadian Wilderness Survival, Bruce Zawalsky, says snow can actually be a huge help when it comes to keeping warm.

It can be used as an insulator and keeps you from wandering further into the woods.

“Snow is great insulation, you can use it as a shelter, you can use it for wind walls,” says Zawalsky.

Along with securing your physical safety, another major factor in survival is your mental well-being.

Lauren Phillips with the Prince George Search and Rescue advises people to slow down and think about the situation before acting. She says our mental well-being can be the first to go when we are in a stressful situation, and not being able to think clearly can be the difference between life and death.

Ultimately, both survival experts say the same thing: prepare for the “what ifs” before you go out.
