There was much celebration outside Studio 2880 today, with drumming and singing. It was a celebration of a new organization to help First Nations artists in Northern BC, the Northern Indigenous Artists’ Collective.

“We are going to advocate for those artists, help them out with things like grant preparations, bios, you know, the not-so-artistic side of the business of selling artwork,” explains Darrin Corbiere, one member of the steering committee to create the Collective.

The group opened an office in Studio 2880 and will soon be hiring an Indigenous Arts Administrator. One of the first orders of business for that individual will be to work toward helping the fledgeling organization to become am independent arts council in the coming year.

The steering committee is currently comprised of Shirley Babcock, Darrin Corbiere, Carla Joseph, Lynette La Fontaine, Dianne Levesque, Len Paquette and Jennifer Pighin. Ivan Paquette acts as the liaison between the group and the Community Arts Council, where he serves as the Reconciliation Officer on their board of directors.
