Rise In Illegal Drug Deaths In March

VICTORIA – The B-C Coroners Service says the number of suspected drug overdose deaths in the province was up 58 percent in March over the previous month.

It says the 161 deaths was the second-highest total since the record 162 recorded in December 2016.

That brings the total number of deaths through the first three months of this year to 391, compared with the 400 reported during the first quarter of last year.

Preliminary data indicate fentanyl was detected in more than eight in every 10 of the deaths.

Fraser Health is urging students to take precautions to avoid the risk of an overdose with graduation celebration season set to begin across the province.

Health Minister Judy Darcy says she’s encouraging families to talk openly with students about the unintended risks of drugs and alcohol and how to ensure a safe return home before the ceremonies and celebrations begin.

Fraser Health medical health officer Dr. Aamir Bharmal says 23 people under the age of 19 died in B-C due to an overdose last year.

He says that while the health authority encourages young people to avoid drugs altogether, talking about substance use and setting up a safety net can help save lives.
