Prince George E.O.C. Opens

PRINCE GEORGE – With days of warm sunny conditions in the forecast, the City of Prince George is taking steps to prepare for a major melt of alpine snow.  It’s proactively opened it’s Emergency Operations Centre.

The move is being taken because of the increased risk of rising water levels in both the Nechako and the Fraser rivers.  With the Centre open the City will have quick access to emergency funding from the provincial government to deal with flood mitigation efforts.

No warnings, alerts, or evacuation orders have been issued to homeowners or businesses at this time and nothing is imminent.  However, the City has closed a section of the Heritage River Trail from the Canoe Launch at Cottonwood Island Park to Taylor Drive. The island in Cottonwood Island Park has also been closed, along with Paddlewheel Park which is downstream from the confluence of the Nechako and Fraser rivers.

Crews with Prince George Fire Rescue Services will monitor the rivers through the weekend.  In the meantime, residents are being advised to exercise caution when walking near rivers.
