VANCOUVER – The BC College of Family Physicians (BCCFP) is recognizing family doctors for their work across the province, in honour of BC Family Doctor Day on May 19th. Local physician, Dr. Terri Aldred was among the recipients and she received the First Five Years of Practice Award. The award goes to a physician practising in Prince George. She is the Medical Director for the Prince George Foundry Clinic along with the Site Director for the Indigenous Family Medicine Program and family physician for Carrier Sekani Family Services.

Dr. Bent Hougesen from Hazelton also received the My Family Doctor Award for Northern Health.

He has been a family physician for the past 25 years and continues to make a difference and be helpful to others. A team of family doctors from Houston, Smithers, Terrace and Haida Gwaii that make up the Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice were also honoured with the Innovations in Primary Care Award. Those physicians include Drs. Jocelyn Black, Brenda Huff, Greg Linton, Matthew Menard, Wouter Morkel and Onuora Odoh.

“As family doctors, our work is grounded in patient-centred care. Through the development of the doctor-patient relationship, we are able to know our patients, and use this knowledge to guide and advise our patients to manage their health needs; both immediately and in the long term. From the nominations, it was clear to see how much patients appreciate having a compassionate and understanding advocate working with them, whether they are raising a young family or coping with chronic or critical illness,” said BCCFP president, Dr. Jeanette Boyd.
