Category 2 Fire Ban To Be Rescinded

Jun 1, 2018 | 11:17 AM

PRINCE GEORGE – A category 2 fire ban in the Prince George Fire Centre will be rescinded Saturday at noon.  The move is being made due to recent rainfall and cooler temperatures in the region.

That means fireworks and burn barrels can be used again.  However, fire officials are asking the public to be cautious with any outdoor fires.

Category 2 fires include:

  • burn barrels and burn cages
  • air curtain burners
  • binary exploding targets
  • sky lanterns
  • fireworks, including firecrackers
  • stubble or grass fires over an area smaller than 2,000 square metres

Anyone who is considering a fire larger than two metres high by three metres wide, or a grass burn larger than 0.2 hectares must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time, by calling 1 888 797-1717.  These fires are considering Category 3 fires and require a burn registration number ahead of time.

An open burning violation can lead to a fine of $1,150, an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
