Playground Replacements Identified

PRINCE GEORGE – The City has identified the next round of parks to see attention this year, as part of the larger, five-year Parks Plan.

The parks are Sanderson, Jackpine, Quinson, Starlane, and Ridgeview. They were identified in an external audit of the city’s 66 parks. Two years ago, 20 parks were removed completely and the City is now in the process of replacing the remainder.

“To replace all of them at once would have been in the millions of dollars,” says Chris Bjorn, the Supervisor of Parks.

There will also be a new park in the Hart, to be built beside Heather Park School. The school was originally built as a middle school. It has since become of dual track school for elementary-aged students. It meant there was never any thought to a playground during construction.

The local Parent Advisory Council found a great location for such a park.

“We were actually looking to build a playground. Initially, we thought the school had stakes in that land. Once we delved a little deeper into the actual owner of the property, we found it was the City’s.”

So they forged a partnership. The City will provide the land and access, while the PAC would buy and install the equipment. The parents have raised $115,000 and are hoping for a little more help to hit the $150,000 mark.

The goal is to have all the playgrounds in place before the school year begins in the fall.
