Heat Wave Leads To Increased Power Demand

VANCOUVER — As a heat wave shimmers over much of the province, BC Hydro is warning of potentially record-breaking electricity use.

A news release from the utility says the demand for power could break records for the month of June.

Customers across BC used nearly 7300 megawatts yesterday — over 10 percent more than was used on the previous Monday — and just shy of the 7500 megawatts used one day last August when Hydro says the province hit an all-time consumption record.

Hydro urges residents to conserve power and stay cool by closing curtains to block the sun, making liberal use of ceiling fans and cooking outside, if possible, to keep heat out of the house.
