Staying Safe On The Water This Summer

Jun 24, 2018 | 6:30 AM

VICTORIA – Now that summer is officially here, the BC Coroners Service is urging visitors and residents to be extra careful when going near lakes, rivers or the ocean. Statistics show a spike in drowning deaths over the summer months.

Things to watch out for include sudden drop-offs into deep water, unexpected cold temperatures, unexpected underwater obstacles and unstable or slippery rock edges above cliffs and waterfalls. Some other things to keep in mind when out near or on the water is check the weather forecast before going out, don’t mix alcohol with swimming or boating, always wear a life jacket when you’re on a boat and have any children or weak swimmers wear them as well, never swim alone, never dive into unknown waters and always supervise your children.

If you have visitors coming to see you and they’re not familiar with the lake or river that you’ll be at, warn them about any hazards including cold water, strong currents, rapids or steep drop-offs.
