Western Acres To Get New Well

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been on the City’s wish list for two decades. A new source of water for residents of Western Acres.

“At that time, there was a very big boom going on and that area was under a land use contract and there was an obligation of the developer of the day to put in a water system,” explains Dave Dyer, the General Manager of Engineering and Public Works. “So the first thing he did was put in a well but after that, everything went down south in the early 80’s.”

But that well is old and needs to be replaced. Test wells were dug throughout the neighbourhood. But access to one reservoir was not available to the City. Until recently.

Mike Hurrell was part of brokering the deal that got the City that land.

“It’s going to allow for growth and develop in the area. They’re building a brand new treatment plant and basically, all the residents of the area are getting access to high quality of water and the volume of the water will allow the area to expand.”

He says the well will generate nearly 10,000 litres of water per minute. That kind of flow will broaden the footprint, improving water access to the Haldi Road region as well as far east as University Heights.
