Fire Preparedness In The RDFFG

PRINCE GEORGE — With 452 wildfires burning across BC Friday, it’s a good idea to have the right emergency kit and other preparations in case we have to leave our homes.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George would like to see residents prepare the kits that will last them 72 hours. You can pick up a ready-made kit from the Canadian Red Cross online, the Salvation Army and other local retailers. Aside from what’s already provided, people should add things that best suit their needs, such as copies of the medications they’re taking, a list of emergency contacts that include their doctor, dentist and pharmacist along with a copy of your insurance papers. If you have children, it’s best to pack some activities such as playing cards, crosswords, bubbles and books. You can also pack iPods, chargers, spare glasses, food, water, a manual can opener, a crank radio, whistle, sheets, blankets, ID, extra cash and any information on your pets if you have them. In the case that an area of the RD does get put on an evacuation alert, information packages will be provided to residents, either at their doorstep or online. The packages include brochures about the alerts, evacuation orders and checklists for what you should pack along with what you should do with your property including the option to FireSmart it. When it comes to emergency preparedness, you can stay updated by registering for the RD’s alert system online

To keep an orderly evacuation, cooperation is a key factor, therefore; the Regional District works closely with the City of Prince George, Emergency BC, BC Wildfire Service and volunteer firefighters. Adam Davey is a month into his newly created position as Manager of Emergency Programs for the City. The full-time position was developed following the fires that took place last summer in order to take a look at the entire suite of emergency preparedness. That includes planning, exercises, coordination and collaboration. Davey says that locals can find additional information about emergency preparedness on the City website

It’s important that we are prepared, work together and support each other in times of crisis. Through that teamwork, we can remain safe and strong.
