PRINCE GEORGE – There was more progress against some of the wildfires south of Prince George in the last 24 hours.

The Cariboo Regional District has cancelled the evacuation alert affecting communities north of Quesnel including Ten Mile Lake, Cinema, Moose Heights and Strathnaver.  However, Nazko, Baker Creek and Blackwater remain under the alert.  It’s also lifted the evacuation alert impacting nearly 5 dozen properties in the Houseman Road area, about 25 kilometres northeast of 100 Mile House.

The Narcosli Creek fire, which has put West Quesnel on Evacuation Alert is now 50 percent contained.  Fire crews have managed to surround 90 percent of the fire with a guard. Much of the heavy equipment work is being down overnight under cooler conditions.

No resources are currently on the Shag Creek fire due to safety reasons. It’s burning at 9,300 hectares and so far it’s zero percent contained.

The evacuation order was expanded due to the Blackwater River fire, which is at about 4,500 hectares in size.

To the west, the Shovel Lake fire continues to be fed by strong winds.  BC Wildfire crews say the blaze is about 50 kilometres southwest of Fort St James.  Efforts are being focused on protecting properties on the northern shore of Fraser Lake where an evacuation order is in place.

An expanded evacuation alert and order has been issued for the areas around the Nadina-Verdun wildfire, which is still at 25,000 hectares.

BC Wildfire says fire activity has picked up in the centre of the Island Lake wildfire, south Francois Lake Resort. Crews have built a guard and will be reassessing it later on. An expanded evacuation order and alert continue to be in effect for the area.
