PRINCE GEORGE- The next time you visit the University, you’ll see a new wooden structure near the bus loop. It is a bus shelter that was partially designed by students of the wood engineering program. “Students came up with the initial design and facilities group has taken over the project in terms of implementing it,” said Facilities Management assistant director, David Claus. Construction started Wednesday afternoon, and it was put together somewhat like a piece of Ikea furniture. “That’s part of what modern wood construction looks like, you have specialized connectors so everything comes together and slides together efficiently. ” Using equipment in the Wood Innovation Research Lab downtown, students along with UNBC’s facilities department designed the project on computer programs to fit together piece by piece. The wood used for the project was also milled at WIRL. UNBC’s facilities department is waiting to install the glass, roof, and stain the structure, with the hope that the bus shelter will be complete by the beginning of the school year.
