WHISTLER – From the annual Union of BC Municipalities convention, the Province and the union will continue to work together toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

The renewed memorandum of understanding (MOU) highlights the need for local governments to continue developing relationships at the grassroots level with Indigenous governments and communities. In doing so, it will create conversations and partnerships that will benefit everyone. Discussions include matters that affect things such as treaty negotiations and non-treaty agreements, along with other initiatives with Indigenous communities.

“Local governments are a key partner in the Province’s efforts for reconciliation with Indigenous peoples,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This agreement affirms the importance of strong relationships between all levels of government that are needed to gain a better understanding of Indigenous priorities and begin the process of true reconciliation that benefits everyone.”

“The level of consultation that has gone into the renewal of this MOU gives us confidence that its intent will be fulfilled,” said Wendy Booth, UBCM president. “We welcome a stronger collaborative relationship in the vital undertaking of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and are ready to fulfil our role in this partnership.”
