Postal Strike Will Not Affect PR Vote

PRINCE GEORGE – Rotating strike action by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers comes as two important dates have and are arriving in BC. CUP-W is giving Canada Post until Monday to reach a deal before strike action kicks in. Monday is also the first day of the mail-in ballots on a referendum on proportional representation.

“I can’t imagine that the government would wish to delay such an important vote that they’re committed to,” says Jason Morris, UNBC Political Scientist. “And I also can’t imagine, at this late stage, they could switch up the way it is done.”

However, he says a strike could delay the results as mail is typically stockpiled while a strike is underway. Another big date was today, with marijuana becoming legal. But, in BC at this time, it can only be bought legally through the BC Government cannabis store in Kamloops and mailed to buyers. But, again, Morris doesn’t see a strike affecting those sales.

“Well I suppose, even a bit facetiously, people who are interested in using [marijuana] have a history of finding creative ways to access it. So that might not be much of an issue.”
