Remembrance Day March Steeped in Tradition

PRINCE GEORGE – This weekend on Sunday and Monday, CKPG will be observing Remembrance Day through telling local stories, and exploring the traditions surrounding the annual march to the cenotaph which comes with a great deal of pomp and ceremony.

There is a committee that organizes the parade each year. while it is more of a community event, it holds on to some of the military elements.  These elements are long established through tradition over the past century and the line up of the parade remains relatively the same as it was almost 100 years ago.

Military historian Sheldon Clare says, “the orders of march in parade are long extablished in tradition.  Traditionally in Remembrance Day parades the veterans are the primary focus,  you sometimes see bands leading but along with a color guard the primary postion of order is the vetarans.  Then you would see the various service elelments in order of seniority,  generally that means the navy goes first those army units in order of seniority would go next and then the air force and other auxiliary units would follow behind.”

For more about the annual march, along with the story of a local Silver Cross mother and memories from a local veteran, join us for “We Remember”, our CKPG News special on Remembrance Day, Sunday November 11th at noon, 3:00 pm and 6:00pm, and then again Monday November 12th at noon, 5:00, 6:30 and 11:00 pm.
