Mackenzie Mayor Concerned With The Future of the Local Fibre Basket

MACKENZIE  – The District of Mackenzie has a couple new faces on its council and mayor. Council had their first official meeting this week, to work on the current needs and future sustainability of the communities.

Joan Atkinson is the new mayor of Mackenzie. She won the position by acclamation, facing no challengers for the position. Having 11 years of experience on council and the last 4 years as deputy mayor.

During the first council meeting, she updated the new council with what’s happening in the community.  Mayor Joan Atkinson is concerned with the current provincial forest model, as the future of the forest surrounding the community maybe be at risk, as out of town companies are removing the future of their fibre supply.

According to Mayor Joan Atkinson, plans are in place to market Mackenzie to tourists as the community needs to be more economically diversified.
