New Apprenticeship Program In Town

PRINCE GEORGE – The Community Arts Council and Theatre Northwest have embarked on a new endeavour.

For the first time ever, Theatre Northwest, with the help of the Arts Council, will be offering an Apprenticeship program aimed specifically at developing technical and directorial talent in Prince George.

The Arts Council says it has been looking for ways to retain local talent and Theatre Northwest has always been looking for ways to retain local talent.

“The Community Arts Council has been looking for opportunities to invest in local artists and local performers,” says Sean Farrell, Executive Director for the Community Arts Council. “So we really came to Theatre Northwest and said ‘We want to work with you,’  to create an opportunity for a  local resident to ge that kind of first-hand professional experience in stagecraft and production and direction.”

The apprentice chosen is Melissa Glover. She says the opportunity for local talent is huge.

“You don’t have to go to Vancouver. Or you don’t have to go to Toronto to get the training. You can stay here if you have family.”

Theatre Northwest is typically able to find local talent to fill the jobs of things like carpentry and costume-making but 99% of its talent is flown in, which “is frustrating.”

Theatre provides audiences with the chance to feel empathy. They feel for somebody on stage and then they walk out on to the street and, naturally, they’re going to feel a little more for other people.”

Glover is the Artistic Director on two productions this year.
