PRINCE GEORGE — Update: North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson now says police believe alcohol may have played a role in this morning's fatal crash.

No other information is being released at this time.

Earlier: One person is dead and two are critically injured following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 97 just south of Prince George this morning.

North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says a northbound pickup truck crossed the centre line of the highway into the path of a southbound semi-truck between 15 Mile Road and Buckhorn Lake Road just before 1 a.m.

She says the driver of the pickup died and two passengers suffered critical injuries. Saunderson says the driver of the semi suffered minor injuries.

The crash closed the highway in both directions for several hours though it is now open to single-lane alternating traffic.

Saunderson says police believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
