PRINCE GEORGE – One of the city’s most popular facilities is celebrating a milestone.  It’s the Prince George Aquatic Centre’s 20th birthday on December 18th, and the City is celebrating with a party.

The 10.8 million dollar Aquatic Centre was the subject of a referendum question in 1993,  where 77 percent of residents voted in favour of the City borrowing money to build the facility, which was funded with help from the Federal, Provincial governments and the Regional District.

Mayor Lyn Hall was a part of the building committee over two decades ago.  He says the pool was built with the input of many user groups.  Hall says the addition of the 10 metre dive tower also came mid construction after a group of diving enthusiasts fundraised half a million dollars changing the height of the roofline.

Through the years some major events hosted at the aquatic centre include the BC Summer Swim Championships and the synchronized swimming competition at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. An accumulated 5 million users young and old have learned to swim, stayed active and had fun over the years.
