Tips For A Green Christmas

PRINCE GEORGE- It is an annual debate: real or fake tree? It all comes down to personal preference, but REAPS says both can work. Executive Director, Terri McClymont, says fake Christmas trees are worse for the environment as they are not recyclable and made of petroleum-based plastics, but they will last forever if that’s the only tree you purchase. However, real trees should be disposed of properly. McClymont adds it’s important to compost them so they can return to the environment rather than the landfill. Real trees can be brought to the CN Centre on January 4th and 5th to be chipped and composted.

She also suggests people use alternatives for wrapping paper like cloth or reusable bags. But if you’d like to design your own, brown paper is recyclable and can be decorated with paint or crayons. There are a number of resources to have a more eco-friendly Christmas on REAPS Facebook page
