PRINCE GEORGE – Taking place on December 16th for the first time is the Prince George Winter Festival.

The event is put on by the South Asian Student Society, a group that was created to carry on a tradition of raising awareness and preserving South Asian heritage.

“The South Asian Student Society aims to bring people of all backgrounds together for a shared purpose – the collective celebration of many ways of being,” says a member of the Society, Barkha Banger.

“The impetus behind this event is to create a social gathering that we as a community can build on. With growing diversity and heightened interest and awareness, there is a lot of potential to promote cultural identity and self-identity within Prince George.  It is also very important for us to support local acts and businesses. Bringing to life the arts and culture influenced by different traditions, geographies and worldviews.”

The event will take place at the Hart Crown Banquet Hall with vendors, dancers, comedians and more from 10 until 4 pm.

The festival is a fundraiser for the charity “Our Satya”, an international organization that engages the global community to respond to health and the well being of women and infants within impoverished conditions around the world.

A local woman, Shobha Sharma founded “Our Satya” in 2015 and the organization is now working in India, engaging rural communities in programming around education, equality and medical outreach.

“One mother at a time, Our Satya, is actively working to empower women to first respond, and then change their reality,” adds Banger.

The South Asian Society recently hosted a mock wedding and they hope to continue growing their group and events.
