Elves For Elders

PRINCE GEORGE – A group of local individuals have started a fun initiative to spread joy during the Christmas holidays.

The idea was inspired by the London Drugs Christmas Tree For Seniors but this event has been going on in Prince George for a little bit longer.

It all started with a post on the Facebook page “Questions and Answers of PG” asking local residents what they thought about starting an event that gets the community giving gifts to seniors for Christmas. And within an hour, Kari Gaddy had over 95 responses.

“Everybody was so interested. Those 95 people were so interested that we decided to maybe form a group and you know I got elected. So I said what I’ll do is reach out to some of the senior agencies and see how it works and see if we can get enough interest,” says Organizer, Karri Gaddy.

In their first year, back in 2016, the event assisted 147 seniors and this year they are hoping to beat 300. Gaddy says the reason for starting Elves for Elders is to honour her parents and for people just like herself.

“One day it’s going to be me because I’m an only child and I have no children. So I can relate to those people being alone. The thing that makes it all worthwhile is the tears that we’ve shared together, I’ve seen the seniors tear up,” adds Gaddy.

On Sunday the stockings were stuffed and they’ll be delivered later in the week but it took a lot more than a couple of hours and hands to put it all together.

“It’s busy. I was up late last night because I was drop off coordinator so I had like 90 stockings in my basement and so we’ve been on the go but we have lots of people to help and more hands make light work,” says Stocking Coordinator, Shawna Stubbs.

The Elves For Elders group is always looking for additional help as they want to grow the event and number of volunteers each year.
