Warm Weather Causing Problems For Ice Oval

PRINCE GEORGE – While today’s warm temperature has been keeping city crews busy clearing drains and roadways, the Ice Oval is facing its own set of problems.

The mild weather is supposed to hold over the weekend and further melting of the Oval’s ice surface will jeopardize races scheduled for tomorrow. The ice is currently very soft, and covered with a layer of water, making racers feel like they are skating in soup.

The Ice Oval was built without underground refrigeration, the lack of which has hampered the facilities ability to bid on large scale events. Adding refrigeration would allow the Oval to host provincial and possibly national events. The Oval is currently limited to smaller events, like the one they have this weekend. Several racers pulled out of this weekend’s event due to the poor ice conditions.

Recently an unfunded City Council project to build refrigeration for the Oval was proposed, carrying a $3.7 million dollar price tag. Council has yet to allocate any money to the proposal.
