Several Neighbourhoods Hit By Mailbox Break-ins

PRINCE GEORGE – Several community mailboxes in various neighbourhoods around the city were broken into over the weekend, as thieves tried their luck. Now that Christmas has come and gone, fewer packages are on people’s doorsteps, and thieves have had to take a different strategy to get at people’s goods.

The community mailboxes had their doors either pried or smashed open before thieves made off with the contents. Multiple mailboxes across the city were targeted.

Postal workers have argued against the community mailboxes for some time, saying that they are easily targeted by thieves, and present a challenge for seniors who may have to walk along icy sidewalks. Their solution: a full return of door-to-door mail, which workers believe would help Canada Post offer more services.

While the door-to-door debate continues, police are urging people to stay vigilant and that anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or people near their mailboxes call RCMP.
