Cannabis Store Gets First Two Readings

PRINCE GEORGE – Council has approved the first two readings of a re-zoning application that would make way for the city’s first retail cannabis store. It is being proposed for the now-vacant RBC building in the Westgate Shopping complex.
It is an application by the provincial Liquor Distribution Branch and, if approved, will constitute only the second government cannabis store in BC.
But Councillor Brian Skakun had questions around when the application was made, adding there are several private applications awaiting the Province’s approval before it comes to Council.
In a letter to the City, the TBD cited three reasons for choosing that location: It is in a large retail complex “and therefore consistent with the nature of the immediate area,” it is easily accessible and it is not expected to “adversely impact traffic in the surrounding area.”
The size of the proposed store is 2,000 square feet, which is the mid-range of other retail stores.
A public hearing is likely to take place at the February 4th regular meeting.
