Schools will remain open despite cold weather

PRINCE GEORGE- The recent cold spell has everyone bundling up and bringing out their winter coats. It also has the schools and the school district dusting off and taking a look at their policies for extreme weather.

The current policy for the schools is currently undergoing a revision to better explain what extreme weather is and what the course of action would be as a result of it.

The Prince George School District has a policy in place where anything below minus 15 and they will keep the kids indoors if the principal deems necessary. Schools will almost never close due to cold weather alone and the only time they might consider closing schools is if there were extreme cold temperatures below minus 50. If the weather gets to that point then it would be up to the superintendent of schools to make that call.

Due to the vast geographical area of the school division, any school closure is most likely just going to be a local closure. This was the case at Pinewood school last week when a pipe burst and the students were unable to attend classes while it was getting fixed.
