PRINCE GEORGE – Transitioning from military to post service life can be difficult, but there’s help now through a new mental health first aid course for veterans and those who support them.

The course is offered through the Mainland BC Military Family Resource Centre and it is making a stop in Prince George this weekend.  There are still a few spots available to members of the public who can contribute to supporting veterans and past RCMP members.

Medically released corporal Angela Ayre knows the value of the course, after 14 years in the military she felt she had lost her identity. “Serving in the military is not like a regular job. Soldiers eat, breathe and sleep their job. Everything they do is closely knit. They are willing to die for the person beside them.  They are operationally trained to go to war and to sacrifice,”said Ayre

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, diagnoses of PTSD among military members have risen 60 percent over the last five years. Here in Prince George it’s estimated there are about 70-80 current military families living in the area with hundreds more who are veterans.
