PRINCE GEORGE — A 33-year-old Penticton man is facing charges following an early morning traffic stop in Prince George.

Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass says it happened at around 2:30 a.m. this morning on Strathcona Avenue when an officer tried to pull over the vehicle after police observed “a Motor Vehicle Act” offence.

“The driver refused to stop for police and continued to the western end of the street,” he says. “The officer attempted to block the vehicle in at the end of the street, at which time the driver rammed the police car. The driver and the passenger were arrested shortly after without further incident. The police officer did not report any injuries.”

Douglass says a search of the vehicle found bear spray, knives and a small amount of what is believed to be fentanyl.

After the arrest, police found that Michael Daniel Jakins was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant out of Vancouver for break and enter, possession of break-in instruments and driving while prohibited.

Jakins is now facing the following charges in relation to this morning’s incident:

  • Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
  • Fail to stop for a peace officer
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace (two counts)
  • Carrying a concealed weapon.

Jakins has been held in police custody and will appear in court later today.

If you have any information about this case you are asked to call police.
