Beware of overwintering fires

PRINCE GEORGE — As warmer weather reaches all parts of the province, the BC Wildfire Service is advising British Columbians that some hot spots could re-emerge due to what is called overwintering fires.

An overwintering fire can occur when a wildfire that burned deep underground the previous year has continued to smoulder all winter long.

The Wildfire Service adds given the severity and intensity of many wildfires last summer, some of these hot spots could flare up with the arrival of warmer and drier weather this spring.

It’s standard practice for wildfire crews to monitor such fires, however, if you see a wildfire or a flare-up, you’re asked to report it on your cell phone at *5555 or call 1-800-663-5555.
