FORT ST. JAMES — A First Nations band near Fort St. James has been granted independence by the federal government.

Members of the Binche Whut’en voted in favour of independence last August – a move that had been in the works since 2011 when band members passed a unanimous motion to proceed with separation from the Tl’azt’en Nation.

Arguing it’s all about freedom, the Binche Whut’en and Tl’azt’en Nation say that independence will allow both communities to work with its membership to develop a system that honours their own strengths.

With independence under its belt, the Binche Whut’en says it frees them from the Indian Act and will allow them to work towards being a self-sustaining community by investing in a diverse economy, creating jobs and improving social support services infrastructure.
