VICTORIA — The Province is once again stepping up to reconcile with the Cheslatta Carrier Nation.

It was back in 2016 that former BC premier Christy Clark visited the area south of Francois Lake to sign a framework agreement that would help heal the wounds from tragic flooding that made way for the creation of the Nechako Reservoir and pledged money to help move that community forward.

Cheslatta people were evacuated in 1952 with just two weeks notice and forcibly resettled. The flooding washed away their lands, villages, and cultural and spiritual sites.

In a release today, the Province says it’s doing more. It has signed a Settlement and Interim Reconciliation Agreement that will provide the Cheslatta Nation with more funding and lands to create a base for future community, social, and economic development.
